These photos were taken by Ron Lapthorn at the Labour club where our Handicraft Group hold their meetings.

At our meeting in January Mrs. Angel Hirst, one of our U3A members, kindly agreed to give our group a talk on her cottage industry, both contemporary & vintage knitting and she also does photoprops.

She said she has enjoyed knitting from a very early age.

She brought boxes upon boxes of her work and how wonderful they were, from beautiful soft shawls in various colours to hats, scarves, baby hammocks, baby pods (stork sacks as she called them) diaper covers, to christening gowns to name just a few!.

Her work is of a very high standard. Her ambition this year is to make a wedding dress!

She has even involved her husband Tony into making her knitting needles! She obtains her wool from all over the world, eg. Turkey, Mongolia and cashmere wool from China in addition to the U.K. like Bristol and home-spun merino wool from Mitcheldean.

She is setting up her website, Hodsknits, at www.hodsknits-knitting.co.uk

The ladies at our meeting said they thoroughly enjoyed Angela’s talk and her wonderful display and bought some of her garments.

Thank you once again Angela.

"TAPESTRY FOR CALDICOT"

Our Handicraft group led by Beryl Lewis held it's first meeting with representative Pauline Heywood from "Friends of the Castle" to discuss a proposed plan for the Handicraft and Art group to design and make a Tapestry for Caldicot.

(The design in the photograph is not part of the proposed Tapestry for Caldicot)

At the first meeting today Pauline Heywood a keen Historian and supporter of Caldicot History, outlined the idea to a representative from the U3A Art group Ron Lapthorn, members of our U3A Handicraft group and myself, after an interesting discussion a decision to go ahead was made.

If you are interested in this project, feel you have something to offer and would like to become involved please contact me through this website.

Handicraft Group

Recently our Handicraft group were kindly invited to the home of Herta Puls for a talk and an exhibition of her handiwork.

The twelve of us were overwhelmed by her hospitality and in awe of her work which she displayed all over the house including the bathroom!
Herta studied embroidery at Newport and West of England art colleges and at the London College of Fashion. She has A City & Guilds Certificate in Advanced Embroidery.

Her interest and studies have taken her to many countries including America, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Germany. She has lectured and written books on her work of Applique, Textiles of the Kuna Indians of Panama and many more. A wonderful morning was had by all of us.

If any one has some spare double knitting wool in any colour, please could you pass it onto me as our group are knitting Pull-on Baby Hats for newborn babies in the Delivery Suite and the Neo-natal ward of our local hospital.

Friends of the Castle at Caldicot Castle have been granted £600.00 by Monmouth County Council to produce a tapestry of Caldicot. We have been asked to be involved in the making of this.

If anyone is interested in joining this venture, please contact me.

Beryl Lewis, Convenor Handicraft group.
