On Thursday the 15th July at the normal monthly meeting, the Drama Group entertained members of the Caldicot U3A with a musical extravaganza. Those who attended were treated to an afternoon of fun and laughter.
The Master of Ceremonies was Reg Kelly, who had only been given the programme two days before the show and made an excellent job with his humourous jokes and accidental slip-ups which added to the fun.
The backroom guys did a wonderful job with the scenery and music and these were John Duke, John Prothero, Audrey Bright, Glenice Dallow, Alan Viney.
Many of the songs performed were from the Fifties to the Eighties and lots of humour was added to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves (including the performers).
Those appearing were:
Adrian Dallow - Red Feathers, Lady in Red, Living Doll and Sisters.
Tony Hirst - Thank Heaven for Little Girls, You’re the One that I want and Sisters.
Brian Metcalf – My Ole Man’s a Dustman, Come Outside, and Sisters.
Wendy Prothero – Those were the Days, Que Sersa Sera and Mama Mia
Irene Viney – You’re the One that I want, Hound Dog
Dianne Payne – Combine Harvester, Mama Mia
Pam Caines – Big Spender
Cindy McOwen – Que Sera Sera, My Ole Man’s a Dustman, Hound in Hound Dog.
Jan Potter – My Ole Man’s a Dustman, Horse in Combined Harvester
Ann Duke – Combine Harvester, Come Outside, Mama Mia
Muriel Metcalf – Que Sera Sera
Everyone above appeared in the Chorus lines along with, Joyce Davies, Lillian Selmes, Sue Bird and Noreen Powell.
DRAMA GROUP February 2010
On Thursday the 25th February we were invited to entertain Risca U3A. We have performed for them before and knew that we would be sure of a warm welcome.
We decided that they would appreciate our edition of ”The Last of the Summer Wine.”
I am sure you will remember we presented it to you last July. Our very own Pam Caines wrote, produced and performed in this show, she also wrote additional dialogue which worked very well and added a great deal of humour.
As you know, we are “famous” for our sets and props but sadly the stage at Risca could not accommodate them. However, “troopers” as we are we managed well on a fairly bare stage.
Risca are a very appreciative group and were very complimentary afterwards. The group performed really well and made me, as their convenor, very proud. Once again John Duke set up and manned our technology which seemed to impress our hosts. Audrey Bright, our trusty prompt, ws on hand but not required, our thanks to her.
We love to perform as you know and look forward to presenting our musical extravaganza in July and a public performance of the panto “Red Riding Hood”. We hope you will encourage your friends and relatives to come along on Friday May 7th at 2pm in the Choir Hall.
Once again its thanks to my actors Pam Caines, Adrian Dallow, Jan Potter, Irene Viney, Ann Duke, Wendy Prothero and Noreen Powell.Dianne Payne - Convenor

At our monthly meeting in July our Drama Group entertained us to two wonderful sketches which were written by two of our members.
"LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE"

two Drama Group performances
"Last of the Summer Wine" was written by our Chairman Pam Caines, who played the part of Nora Batty.
"HELLO HELLO"
Tony Hirst wrote "Hello Hello" and took the part of Rene. The cast have only had two months to learn their parts due to their their last production being in May.
Our members filled the choir hall which continually rang with laughter at many moments in both sketches, one moment being when all the ladies in "Last of the Summer Wine" raised their cups from the saucers all in one move.
Although there were many laughs I felt the largest laugh in "Hello Hello" was when Herr Flick played by Adrian Dallow, Helga played by Cindy McOwen and Von Smallhausen played by Sue Bird walked or should I say limped on to the set in their black plastic macs.
Thank you all in the Drama group and the tea team, a wonderful afternoon's entertainment plus the refreshments and your company.

The story was the Germans were holding their Sauerkraut Festival and someone had stolen their cabbages and sausages. Hostages were to be shot if they were not returned when the town hall clock struck noon on Sunday but then the town hall clock was stolen. The Resistance had a plan and it all works out nicely and Rene goes off to receive his reward from Yvette!!

"THE SPY WHO CAME IN FOR THE PHONE"

The one act play was produced by Pam Cairns and set at the height of the Cold War in London in the swinging Sixties when newly-weds Chris [played by Adrian Dallow] and Sally [Cindy McOwen] Taylor are moving into their new flat.
Ron [Rodney Imrie] a telephone engineer with a passion for paperwork is installing a new LZ920D telephone.
However the Taylors hadnt ordered one and very soon they start getting some very strange coded messages concerning a yellow zebra, Dracula and John Wayne.
They have an unexpected visitor, a Russian lady [Irene Viney] who claims to be from The Department of Tourism and Sanitation and demands that the phone should be removed so it can be installed in the correct property The Russian Embassy in Kensington.
Mrs Davies [Jan Potter] their friendly neighbour and cleaner decides to seek help from The Law as the Russian lady is threatening the telephone engineer with a gun because he refuses to remove the shiny red phone unless all the necessary forms are signed.
Nobody will complete the forms. The policeman [Tony Hirst] quickly handcuffs the Russian Spy but in the process of taking all the details from those involved the Spy disappears. Chris and Sally are now free to return to their decorating project .
The mix of characters and the situation made the whole thing extremely funny and the hilarious play had the audience in stitches. This was followed by a sumptuous tea prepared by the Drama Group and enjoyed by all.
