The Art group decided to have a day out during the summer break and went to Caldicot Castle but the weather decided it was going to rain all day and only the bravest decided to stick it out under the cover within the castle walls. Thanks for the thought Mary but please can you arrange the weather better next time.

Art Group Christmas Lunch

Sue and Vernon

Jan Christmas Lunch Organisor

The U3A Art Group 2013 Christmas Lunch was organised by Jan Gould and held on the 11th December at the Hilton Hotel, Langston. Everyone enjoyed themselves in the luxury surroundings and service they received.

On arrival we were met by cloakroom attendants and waiters with a glass of sherry.  After a wonderful Lunch a presentation was made to our convenor Sue Thomas: it was from the group for all the hard work that Sue has put in on our behalf throughout the past year.

Jan was given a vote of thanks for all the time she has given to organising today's lunch. The only hiccup was with the photographs but we managed to capture one or two for the album.

A MEMBER of Caldicot U3A Art Group and has just produced her third postcard of local scenes from a watercolour picture.

Barbara Davies is a self taught artist working mostly in watercolour and was inspired by a teacher in primary school who pinned her picture of horses on the classroom wall, that was enough to encourage her to continue.

Her latest postcards depict the Wye Valley with Monmouth, Chepstow, Tintern Abbey and Ross On Wye.

Her first was of Caldicot with seven scenes including the Castle, Church, and other places of interest. This proved to be a success and was sponsored by the art group.

Her second was another seven scenes, this time being of Chepstow Town and sponsored by Chepstow U3A. The Wye Valley postcards are available at The Caldicot U3A group meetings and the Art Group, or contact

Art Demonstration at Caldicot Library

photo: Fiona Ashley the Librarian with a cartoon for the competition.

An Art Demonstration was organised at Caldicot Library for local artists including our U3A art members. It was organised with the intention of raising the profile of our Library and encourage people to use its facilities.

The art exhibition was held on two consecutive Fridays and the artist Chris Fisher was introduced on each occasion by the Librarian Fiona Ashley.  Chris has illustrated many children’s books and demonstrated his work both Fridays to local artists and students.  After a break for refreshments supplied by the Library Chris invited everyone to take up their pens and try cartooning for themselves with the theme being “Library”.

With the approval of all participants the best will be placed in a folder or even used for publicity.

A draw at the end of the session found our art convenor Sue Thomas win a cartoon to be drawn by Chris for her while she waited. Sue asked him for it to be dedicated to her granddaughter Emma.

We have been invited again this coming Friday.

Our Annual Art Exhibition 2011

Photo's taken by Ron Lapthorn

Our annual Art Exhibition was a successful event although we did not brave the elements outside the hall this year with our pictures on the railings. Great interest was shown in all the work by our members and some of them sold their pictures from which the church will receive 10%.

I would like to thank all the U3A members and public who visited us on the day for helping to make it such a successful day. I would also like to thank Rosemary Browne for keeping us all supplied with tea and cakes which were baked for the church by her mother, thank you June.

In February Rebecca Way visited the art group and gave us a demonstration on how she paints with acrylics. We found the demonstration very interesting and I am sure we will see many more of our members trying this medium; I know I will try it.

Thank you Rebecca: The Art Group

mas Buffet

For our last session of 2010 those members of the art group who escaped Christmas shopping turned up at our usual meeting place the Recreation Hall, Portskewett.

The first session saw our members painting and then during the last session enjoyed yet another Christmas celebration by having an end of term buffet during which our convenor Sue Thomas was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Val Bevan on behalf of our members as a token of our thanks to her for running our group.

On leaving, Stan Griffiths who is also a keen photographer like me said, quick Ron there is a photo of the church to be had; the result can be seen in our slide show.

mas Dinner

A friendly atmosphere and a wonderful Christmas Dinner was the consensus of opinion amongst our members and partners, although friends looking at the photo's may have difficulty in matching up some of our pairs as we were all mixed around the table which made for the wonderful end of term celebration.

Sue our convenor thanked Tony for all the arranging and reminded us we had one more week of the term to do but only up until half time of our lesson, then it will be another feast of home made goodies plus coffee and tea to wash them down.

How lucky we were with the weather after all the rain we had previous days in the lead up to our Art Exhibition on the railings and in the Caldicot Methodist Chapel hall.

A steady flow of visitors throughout the day browsed the display of our artists work and from remarks overheard everyone went away happy, visitors who had viewed the display and those that had managed to sell some of their paintings and others that had just displayed their work.

Judith did a fine job of demonstrating the techniques of sketching, thank you Judith and all our members and Jack who helped to make the day a success.

We have yet to have a count up but the chapel will be receiving a percentage of all sales.

Water colour artist Vivien Bowman was born in Accrington, Lancashire, and from an early age her work was influenced by the open vistas and grandeur of the Lancashire moorlands and the nearby Pennines. She was particularly fascinated by rocks, strata and fossils she found around her.

Photo: Vivien Bowman

Since moving to Chepstow about ten years ago, she has found new inspiration in the Monmouthshire countryside, in its ancient buildingf, in the River Wye and the nearby Severn and in the neighbouring Forest of Dean.

Living in the area she has developed an increasing appreciation of the surrounding flora, fungi and wildlife, which are reflected in her paintings.

Monnow Bridge, Monmouth watercolour by Vivien Bowman

As a consequence of her love of animals, Vivien often finds herself commissioned to create lifelike portraits of much-loved pets.

Building on her previous experience as a lecturer in further education, she now also runs painting courses at Chepstow Hospital, providing a therapy for people suffering from strokes and Parkinson's disease.

WE are very fortunate to have Vivien as a member of our Art group, providing her experience and help to members at our art classes, as all of our members do.

Caldicot U3A are very lucky to have so many talented members in their Art group.
